Kibbey and I are starting the second day of our #KCEats trip at Heirloom Bakery & Hearth in the Mission Hills area of Kansas City. Kibbey is our resident breakfast aficionado, so what he says goes. He had heard about this place from several otherwise reputable friends, so this seemed a good bet. And it was.
When you walk in, you see a large butcher block where they’re making bread right in front of you.
That seemed like a very good sign. Well, that and the huge display of fresh made pastries. One cute little girl had picked out a croissant that was about as long and wide as her head. Smart girl.
Kibbey ordered the blueberry pop tart and cheddar chive biscuit, and some sort of coffee drink; the kind that comes to you with a flower in the foam.
I ordered a draft coffee and the biscuit sammy. That was a cheddar chive biscuit filled with a runny egg, homemade sweet and savory chunky bacon jam, sweet apple chutney, greens, white cheddar, and what I’m pretty sure was unicorn dust.
It comes out hiding its magic; make sure you crack open that egg and let it run wild! Once you do so, the egg yolk is soft and runny and is a perfect counter-play to the richness of the bacon jam and the sweetness of the apple chutney. The base of the biscuit has just a light hint of smokiness from the oven, which added just one more welcome flavor note. This was truly a beautiful, delicious and auspicious start to the day. So if you’re over on this side of town, or any side of any town, head on over to Heirloom Bakery & Hearth and get yourself one of anything. This place is a winner.
