There’s a special place in my heart for a Meat-n-Three, and Jestine’s Kitchen in Charleston, South Carolina is doing it right. It was hot as Blazes the day I came by, and the sweet greeting I received at the door was just as sweet as this frosty, cool sweet tea that came right quick. It also came with a bowl of bright quick cucumber pickles. A pick me up, so to speak. Get that appetite a-going.
As I am wont to do in new cities, I asked what was good. My waitress encouraged the fried chicken, and I’m glad for that. I only order dark. Life is too short for white meat. I asked her what sides to get and she recommended the collard greens and macaroni and cheese.
The chicken had an insanely crunchy crust, which loudly crackled as I bit into it. It was so good that I ate the hole leg before I even took a second to try the rest of the plate. This fried chicken will go down in the canons of fried chicken as the best in my book. No doubt.
But man can’t live by delicious fried chicken alone. The greens and macaroni and cheese were perfectly fine, enhanced by pepper sauce and hot sauce, respectively, but for the calories, I’d just add another piece of dark meat.
I said Meat-n-Three, so make sure you leave some room: Jestine’s makes some terrific pie, all homemade. Today I had the coconut creme pie. They cut me a nice big piece. Heck, I’d even go there just for pie. But you’d be crazy to pass up that chicken.
Charleston is full of wonderful restaurants. Don’t pass up this little gem.
